The Print Media Research Centre (PMRC) is a Faculty-based Research Centre within the Faculty of Communication and Design at Ryerson University. The PMRC’s Scholarly Research and Creative (SRC) agenda focuses on advancing the broad areas of premedia, printing and finishing on an international scale. The PMRC combines the SRC efforts of faculty in the School of Graphic Communications Management (GCM) and other collaborators within the university and internationally, with those of undergraduate and postgraduate students across the university and other institutions around the world. The PMRC forges short and long term research partnerships with industry at local, national, and funding from industry partners results in a one-of-a-kind print media research centre that establishes Ryerson University as the premiere print media research institution in Canada.
Since the 1980’s the Graphic Communications industry has been impacted by the advent of new forms of media and communications technologies. The PMRC capitalizes on the infancy of many of these innovations, and provides the industry a much-needed objective base for research and development on new, emerging, and future technologies and trends. The Centre’s strategic plan focuses on four main areas:
- Fostering, supporting and disseminating research by faulty, students and research associates via publications, conferences, seminars and specialized courses for academics, practitioners, and manufacturers;
- Coordinating/organizing colloquia and a research publication series;
- Facilitation research opportunities for young scholars and;
- Formalizing existing and forging new collaborative research partnerships with the private sector and industry groups.
The PMRC promotes SRC activities in the GCM’s priority research areas of printing processes, premedia, and new technologies in the graphic arts. It encourages and focuses new SRC initiative for faculty and instructors at the School of Graphic Communication Management, greatly enhancing its scope through the promotion interdisciplinary collaboration. The PMRC encourages new academic and industry partnerships for increased funding for new research initiatives.
